The English armed forces worked out that Avon 'skin so soft' worked in the northern hemisphere against midges quite well. So much so that Avon has now released a range of repellents with other additives based on the original product.
In oz, apart from what has already been mentioned, an elder showed us a traditional method which is hacking some korms from the trunk of a grass tree and smoking them up next to the fire. Makes plenty of smoke and works if you don't asphyxiate first. Probably best not tried in a national park.
