75th Anniversary Cockleshell Heroes Raid

Postby cockleshelltexan » Wed May 25, 2016 10:55 pm

2017 marks the 75th Anniversary of the Cockleshell Heroes raid on Bordeaux harbor. Our group will commemorate this event in Galveston Texas next year, concluding with a wreath laying at the US Merchant Marine plaque, honoring the Royal Marine Commandos who took part and by proxy all Allied Special Forces who served, 1939-45. More information can be found on our Facebook page, "Cockleshell Texans". If there are local yakers who wish to join with us, please contact us at msfhouston@gmail.com.

Cheers,
Mick

Anyone who doesn't know this story, it's a hell of a yarn - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Frankton

I read a book about it last year not he recommendation of a paddling mate in the UK, incredibly brave men.

Was later replicated in many regards by Australians in operation jaywick

Later copied in operation rimau, which saw the capture and execution of the Z force members. These troops trained and prepared at Wilsons prom, which is now a favourite spot for paddlers. Makes me think every time I paddle the area.

A few of us did a tribute paddle last year to Camp Z at Refuge Bay near Sydney, another training spot for the Z Special Unit kayakers.

Many thanks for the links here. As posted to a gentleman here, didn't realize the Cockle links extended to Australia during the war.

We have made contact with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and will be filing our float plan in June for next year's commemoration. USCGAUX may be able to shadow our group in motor launch ( still up in the air ), which will be an added safety measure. More info as it becomes available. Cheers, Mick
